About Our Town

North of the Manton depot, the Grand Rapids & Indiana (GR&I) railroad put in several sidings to accommodate the lumber, bark and shingle industries. At the three-mile point, Haire and Montgomery had a mill. Here a little settlement sprang up, eventually containing a depot, post office, two stores, church, school, washing machine factory, sawmill, shingle mill, and a potato house. Haire Siding was an active center of Liberty Township. Cedar Creek, a stream flowing through Liberty Township, was noted for the quality of cedar for shingles. Early settler included the Gray, Foxworthy, Moore, McCane, Blue, Moffit, Fountain, Burns, Seaman, Yeoman, Bredahl and Goodacre families.

Fred Moore had a post office in his store for 24 years. Then it moved across the road, where Mrs. Delano was the last post-mistress. The Moore Store became the Gleaner Hall. A picnic grove, outdoor dance pavilion, and baseball field showed the community spirit for which Liberty Township has always been noted.

Will O. Gray was the organizer behind the church. A yearly Memorial was held in his honor until the late 1970’s.
